We use tape to make recordings and we use tape to put things together. Our raw material is common adhesive tape. You will find it in many shops of this market as anywhere in the world. It is inexpensive.

Hui Ye writes on transparent scotch tape. By doing this layer over layer she makes the inscription unreadable. Being duplicated in multiple overlays of text the words encrypt themselves. The text is an invented dialogue between A and B formulated by the artist in the very moment of writing. Furthermore the text is written multilingual (german, chinese, english) but without any traceable plot. It is a kind of meditation on language which reflects the helplessness the artist is confronted in her every day life.

Franz Schubert uses black adhesive tape to paste numbers on the walls – a collection of data of personal importance. Some talk about his life, others are intended to be secret. But they all diffuse in a bulk of individual digits. So while it is possible to read the digits itself, their relevance as well as the of each individual number remain hidden. They talk without words. They simulate significance.

So, what kind of information do we store with this recordings? Is a potential meaning always hidden by layers of experience? What are you really saying? Which language do you speak? Hui Ye and Franz Schubert are tracking this matters in different ways. They meet each other via their recordings.
